Mantej Singh
Mantej is an undergraduate Barrett student at ASU's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, majoring in Biological Sciences (Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior) with a minor in Economics. Some of his interests include research ethics, civic engagement, and community involvement. He hopes to attend medical school to become a physician and shape future health policy. |
Rodolfo Quijada
Rodolfo is an undergraduate student at ASU's College of Health Solutions majoring in Medical Studies with a minor in Spanish. His interests include community engagement and volunteering. Maya San Roman
Maya is from Yuma, Arizona and a first-generation student. Her major is Psychology and she aspires to obtain a master's degree in Occupational Therapy but more specifically work with people with special needs. She has worked as a leader with the Special Olympics since high school and plans to continue the close connection throughout her higher education. She plans to stay in Arizona and use her education to help the Latino community. |
Steven Garcia-Colon
Steven is a prior servicemember and recent baccalaureate graduate from ASU's New College of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences, majoring in Biology. He is currently pursuing a career in medicine with an interest in anesthesia and aspires to provide care to underserved communities around the world. |
Shashmeen Hoque
Shashmeen is an undergraduate Barrett student at ASU's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She has a deep passion for working with youth and is dedicated to making a positive impact in their lives. Her career aspirations are deeply rooted in her desire to enter the medical profession, with a specific focus on serving under-resourced communities and providing essential healthcare to children in need. |
POST-DOCTORAL SCHOLAR'S
Morgan Braxton, PhD RN
Morgan is a post-doctoral scholar at Edson College of Nursing and Healthcare Innovation. She is originally from North Carolina, where she earned her PhD in nursing from East Carolina University, with a concentration in nursing leadership. She is a certified pediatric nurse, and during her time working in the hospital, realized many admissions could be prevented through public health preventative measures. She is passionate about child health, social determinants of health, caring for underserved populations, and health equity. Her research interests led her to find Dr. Shaibi’s work, and she is excited to be a part of ASU Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. |
Eyitayo Owolabi
Eyitayo is a presidential postdoctoral fellow at Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation. She was born and raised in Nigeria, where she obtained her first degree in Nursing. Driven by her passion for research, in 2015, Eyitayo relocated to South Africa to pursue her graduate studies. She earned her master's and doctoral degrees in Nursing from the University of Fort Hare, South Africa. She is passionate about health promotion and disease prevention, especially for underserved populations. Her primary research interest is in cardiometabolic diseases and risk factors, precisely about efforts aimed at reducing diabetes risk, improving access to quality diabetes care for underserved populations and developing interventions to improve diabetes health outcomes. She is excited to be a part of the Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention at Edson College and looks forward to contributing her quota to achieving the Center's mandate. |
STAFF
Allison Williams, MSW, PMP
[email protected] Allison holds a Master of Social Work and is a globally certified Project Management Professional. She is also a Field Supervisor for master’s students in the ASU School of Social Work. She has a wide variety of direct and community social work practice, and extensive research experience. Since 2009 she has managed large health promotion research studies funded by the National Institutes of Health. She currently works as a research program manager at the ASU Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention, where she manages a team that implements, tests, and refines community-based, culturally grounded, diabetes prevention studies with high risk youth and families. Ms. Williams fosters new community collaborations for ongoing research, and writes community grants to fund programming of evidence-based diabetes prevention programs developed by a team of researchers and community collaborators. Her research interests include family processes to prevent type 2 diabetes, diabetes and health equity, and diabetes related social determinants of health. |
Ismail Alvarado
Ismail has been with the Preventing Diabetes in Latino Families Lab since 2019, and is currently a Research Specialist on the team. She received her Masters of Social Work in May 2022 from ASU Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions Program. She graduated in May 2020 with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, a minor in Women and Gender Studies, and is an alumna from Barrett, The Honors College. Her future career plans include conducting clinical research with the Latino, familial immigrant population. |
